DEPARTMENT OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY
ORTHOPAEDIC UNIT
Introduction
Orthopedic Oncology Unit deals with the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors of bone
and sof t ssues (fat, muscles, blood vessels, deep skin t ssues, nerves, tendon cart lage so on) of limbs and
spine. At present this unit has been providing treatment to all types of bone and sof t ssues tumors, tumor-
like diseases and the primary bone and sof t ssues sarcomas of the limbs and spine. Limb salvage surgeries
and flap coverage of the wound which are demanding surgical techniques are ofen performed. Even the
technically demanding amputat ons around limb girdles such as internal hemipelvectomy of tumor and
preservat on of one lower limb and external hemipelvectomy removal of one limb and half of pelvis) and
forequarter (removal of arm with the scapula and part of clavicle) amputat ons are other surgeries that are
performed.
Rehabilitat on starts soon afer treatment, once a pat ent is surgically and medically stable. Inpat ent
rehabilitat on focuses on teaching pat ents how to move and funct on safely with reconstructed limbs and
cont nues on an outpat ent basis. For pat ents requiring amputat on, post-surgery prosthet c fit ng and
rehabilitat on, the services are coordinated by our office for the needy pat ents.

Future Plans
Endoprosthesis for the affordable pat ents and third opt on of limb salvage surgery for sarcomas originat ng
from the bone or invading the bone, such as Nail Cement Spaces ± plat ng, and resect on followed by
extracorporeal irradiat on and reconstruct on for the pat ent who could not afford for the prosthesis will be
carried out in the near future.
