HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT
Introduction
Palliat ve Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of pat ents and their families facing the problem
associated with life-threatening illness. The goal of palliat ve care is to achieve the highest quality of life of the
pat ent and family having a life-threatening illness.
In BPKMCH, hospice and palliat ve care unit is funct oning since May 2004. But palliat ve care services were
provided since the beginning of hospital services in 1992.
Services
Palliative Care OPD:
We have been providing OPD based palliat ve care services have since November 2004. We were the first to
provide this kind of service in the country. Our OPD is run by mult disciplinary team of experts.
Assessment and management of pain and other symptoms.
Proper pat ent and family counseling regarding the pat ent's disease condit on.
Admission in hospice and palliat ve ward.
Criteria for admission of pat ents in Hospice and palliat ve ward:
Support ve care and end of life care for terminally ill pat ents with advanced stage disease.
Support ve care for cancer pat ents who have foregone curat ve treatment due to various
circumstances.
Pain management
Chronic wound and bedsore management
Intermediate care for pat ents who have completed act ve treatment but require a period of
convalescence prior to returning home.
Management of distressing symptoms like dyspnea, ascites, Vomit ng, intest nal obstruct on,
cachexia, Insomnia, const pat on, etc.
Inpatient services:
We provide holist c care of pat ent addressing on their physical, emot onal, financial and spiritual
needs.
Provide in-depth pain and symptom management.
Formulate and establish a proper care plan (both support ve and end of life care) in the interest of
pat ent and family member's preference.
Family counseling mult disciplinary team regarding disease progression, planning for death and
grieving counseling.
Provide free morphine to all the admited pat ents.
Provide free meals for all the admited pat ents.
Recreat onal act vit es like birthdays and anniversary celebrat on, playing room for pediatric
pat ents, visual and audio entertainment devices.
Provide 24-hour telephone-based services to all the pat ents who have been consulted by our
department.
All sorts of chronic wound management like fungat ng wound, post-operat ve chronic wound.
Daily multdisciplinary team meet ng.
Inpatient consultation services:
We atend all inpat ent calls to ensure all the pat ents admited in the hospital receive expert opinion regarding
pain and palliat ve care in t me.
Home-based palliative care services:
Home-based palliat ve care service has been commenced since 17th August 2010 with the aim to provide
proper palliat ve care to our pat ents who are unable to visit the hospital.At present this service is provided
every Thursdays to those pat ents residing within periphery of about 30 km from our hospital (Chitwan and
nearby districts).

Social services:
Along with physical burden to the pat ents, cancer has huge social burden (including financial and emot onal
burden).Therefore, we realize that it is our utmost responsibility to address these social issues of cancer
pat ents and their families. With the help of social worker (who is trained and cert fied by MNJ Hospital,
Hyderabad), we have been support ng each and every pat ent of BPKMCH including indoor, outdoor, inpat ents
and community and their families in social rehabilitat on before and afer the pat ent's demise. In our view
these issues need to be addressed in every cancer hospital.
Academic Activities
Regular cont nue nursing educat on (CNE) program to upgrade knowledge of nurses.
Guide and arrange regular classes to Master and Bachelor level nursing colleges of Nepal.
Research program in collaborat on with Virginia University, Virginia,USA.
Future Plan
Extension of community palliat ve care in collaborat on with cancer prevent on program of
BPKMCH.
Develop BPKMCH as a nat onal training center for Palliat ve.
Extension of Hospice and palliat ve care services.
