DEPARTMENT OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY
GI SURGERY UNIT
Introduction
Gastrointest nal Surgery Unit (GI Surgery Unit) is one of the branches of Department of Surgical Oncology
department and is a major service providing units of BPKMCH, which has been providing full-fledged services
since its establishment. This unit deals with the diseases mainly malignancies regarding the gastrointest nal
system (Stomach and Intest nes) and Hepatobiliary system (Gall Bladder, Pancreas and Liver) along with
other intra-abdominal malignancies (GIST). Currently, GI unit has 20 inpat ents bed, one major operat on
theatre, and post-op ward. The unit is always eager to provide curat ve and diagnost c services for GI-related
malignancies as well as benign lesions with high morale and inspirat on. In addit on to pat ent care GI unit is
also act vely involved in teaching, training and research act vit es. The department offers advanced training in
the field of GI oncology for residents of various medical colleges around the country.
Services
GI unit offers both outpat ent and inpat ent services for screening, diagnosis, and treatment for cancer
pat ents. GI Surgery unit provides its services in all the weekdays except government holidays. OPD services
are available every day where outpat ents are examined and further management is done along with some
minor surgeries. Operat ve services are provided every alternat ve day on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday
where major surgeries are done.

The above-ment oned numbers are the numbers, which are benefited by us directly via OPD services where we
deal with the intra-abdominal diseases either benign or malignant. We also provide consultat ons regarding
hospitalized pat ents. The unit offers both minor and major operat on services including UGI endoscopy and
Colonoscopy, incisional biopsy, core biopsy, punch biopsy and excision biopsy for various kinds of cancer.
As we provide the major surgical services every alternate weekday, we perform major surgeries Whipple’s
surgery, STG (Sub Total Gastrectomy), Hemi-colectomy, Extended Cholecystectomy, etc. among many of
surgeries done at BPKMCH using advanced surgical approaches.

Future Plans
We are planning for the init at on of the minimally invasive surgeries in the management of cancer cases.
We are planning for the endoscopy assisted gastric tube insert on in cases of advanced proximal carcinoma
stomach and carcinoma esophagus. Also, we are planning for the computerized based data which would be
helpful in future for research and other academic purposes. This unit also aims to increase the number of
pat ents in OPD by providing quality service and care to the pat ents.
