DIETARY UNIT
Introduction
Nutrit on is now recognized as being an important factor in the overall treatment of pat ents with cancer.
All the method of treat ng cancer surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological
therapy are very powerful. These treatments are designated to kill cancer cell. But these treatments can also
damage healthy cells. Damage to healthy cells can cause side effects. Some of these side effects can lead to
eat ng problems. So the healthy and nutrit ous diet is very important for cancer pat ent during and afer their
treatment. A healthy and nutrit ous diet protect ability to fight infect on, prevent wast ng muscles and lean
body mass, help to tolerate treatment, reduce nutrit on-related side effects, help recovery and healing and
improve quality of life. To provide healthy and nutrit ous diet to the pat ents dietary unit was established in
1999.The unit has also played act ve role in other act vit es related to diet and nutrit on.
Services
Dietary counseling
Dietary Unit provides dietary counseling services on a daily basis to the indoor pat ents at the bedside,
outdoor pat ents in dietary unit office (OPD) and also in Hospice.
Food preparation
The dietary unit makes tube feeding diet for gastrostomy feeding, jejunostomy feeding, and NG tube feeding.
Due to high cost of tube feeding diet hospital has been providing tube feeding diet free of cost for the pat ents
from lower socioeconomic status. According to pat ents requirement 400 kcal to 3000 kcal tube feeding diet
of different types (diabet c, high protein, low protein,low fat, etc.) are prepared.
Providing diet charts and booklets
Dietary unit provides booklets about food and nutrit on for cancer pat ents. In the year 2018, about 2723
booklets were distributed to the new cancer pat ents. Dietary unit also makes different types of diet chart
for the pat ents suffering from variet es of diseases. Such as diabet c diet chart, ant dumping diet chart, NG
feeding diet chart, Renal diet chart and other diet charts for different nutrit onal requirements. In the year
2018, about 128 diet charts were distributed to new cancer pat ents.

Academic Activities
-Dietary unit is act vely taking part in teaching nursing students from different Universit es and colleges.
-Dietary unit is involved in Hospice and palliat ve care team.
Human Resources
Dietary services are provided by Asst. Chief Food and Nutrit on Officer Mrs. Shilu Shrestha and Adm. Assistant
Mrs. Sharmila Acharya.
Future plans
To provide different educat onal materials on food and nutrit on for pat ents and general people.
