BREAST SURGERY UNIT
Introduction
Breast surgery in pract ce is since the establishment of BPKMCH and already been performed more than
7000 breast surgeries including MRM, BRS, Reconstruct on surgery. Breast oncology unit was established in
2011 officially, since then it became one of the very important and major unit in hospital with respect to the
volume of pat ents it interacts and provision of service. With limited resource and limited manpower, we are
providing services to more than 120 pat ents in each OPD days and perform about 300 surgeries annually. In
these years because of our hard work, breast unit has become more and more popular and reliable. People
from Nepal and abroad especially India are also visit ng our department for treatment our unit’s aim is to
deliver ultra-modern treatment for all stages of breast cancer, ident ficat on of women at high risk and breast
cancer prevent on and control.
Features of Breast Unit
Comprehensive mult -disciplinary breast cancer services including prevent on, high risk, strong family
history and all aspects of diagnosis.
Reconstruct ve surgeries following wide resect on, pushing the surgical limits of breast-conserving
surgery
Sent nel lymph node biopsy service by gamma probe
Neoadjuvant/preoperat ve endocrine therapy and chemotherapy to avoid mastectomy for larger
cancers.
Younger women -over the year we have developed part cular expert se in this difficult and emot onally
stressful area
Services
Breast unit provides its services in all the weekdays except government holidays. OPD and Operat ve services
are run every alternat ve. Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday are for Operat ve services, whereas Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday are for OPD services.

Future Plans
We are planning to provide more reconstruct on and cosmet c breast surgeries in the near future. Our unit
has high aspirat on to develop services to higher standard to provide quality service, with increase in number
of pat ents we expect advance training and more surgical instruments and more efficient manpower in future.
